The technique use is called Sashiko. It originated in northern Japan around 300 years ago as a practical way to reinforce and repair plain woven linen fabrics. The running stitches helped strengthen the cloth by filling the gaps in the weave, making garments more suitable and durable for their lives, developing into beautiful decorative patterns. Today, Sashiko is celebrated for its simple yet striking aesthetic and its role in mending, upcycling and promoting more sustainable textile practices.
